Traditionally, the month of 'Pyatho' (January ) is the time for the royal equestrian festivals. The custom of holding equestrian festivals is being revived and promoted by the State.

The government and people of the Union of Myanmar celebrate the Independence Day on 4th January every year commencing from 4th January,1948. The whole country is lit up. Yangon is ablaze at night with illuminations all over the city. All Myanmar, in various walks of life, celebrate with pews, fun fairs and races all over the country.
